Screw 2020 and all even years! 2021 is another glorious odd year and that means hordes of Pink Salmon returning to the Puget Sound and the rivers.

Shrimpers…Drop…Your…Pots! (read like “start your engines!”). We have another awesome spot shrimp season in Puget Sound. Check out this blog post for all of the shrimpy details you need to put the best tasting critter in Puget Sound on your boat this year.
We are now within a week or so from getting the final 2021 Puget Sound Salmon Seasons, and based on what’s in the proposed / draft version, it’s mostly good news for the summer salmon season, though 2022 Blackmouth is still a problem.
2021 Salmon seasons are now finalized as the North of Falcon process which determines the sport fishing seasons working with the tribes, concludes.
Marine Area 5 (Sekiu) is currently open until April 30th for hatchery chinook. Marine Area 13 is the only place to fish for hatchery chinook in May. Starting in June and into July, the opportunity expands considerably, see the details below.
I’ve been spending way too much idle time glancing at Facebook posts of all the salmon being caught out in Sekiu. Ahhh! It’s killing me to not be back out there. We had an epic time though on the opener and it sounds like it has been absolutely packed with people since then. This report is about what’s going on closer to home though, so let’s dig in!
WDFW has announced the exact details for the opening of the 2020 Winter Puget Sound crab season. There won’t be as many folks on the water and the crab will be larger with more meat on them.
Time to get more tasty Dungeness crab!
What is it about shrimping that captures so much of the passion and energy of the Puget Sound outdoor enthusiast?
Is it that these are the best-tasting critters in our local waters? Or is it the “closet deadliest catch persona” we all have buried deep within us somewhere?
Whatever it is, it is clear, that we love our spot shrimp and the process of catching them. The much anticipated 2020 Puget Sound Spot Shrimp Season has been announced, let’s get to the details!
Marine Area 9 opened up on February 1st for fishing for and retention of a single hatchery chinook 22″ and larger (blackmouth). There were some initial positive reports and lots of “shaker city” kind of reports.
I couldn’t help myself for too long before I had to go out and check things out.
2020 Salmon seasons have been released as the North of Falcon process concludes. While the biggest headline and disappointment is the loss of most of the winter blackmouth season in 2020-2021, it may only be a one year setback. Summer chinook seasons have a slightly higher quota. Everything kicks off on June 1st with the opening of the Marine Area 10 coho season.
My final update to this post is a link to the 2021 Puget sound salmon season post just released.
Salmon for Soldiers is an amazing event where the recreational boating and sport fishing community get an opportunity to give back to the veterans who have proudly served our country. I highly recommend it for anyone with a boat and a desire to give back.
I also highly recommend it for any active duty, returning from deployment, or retired military. Words on a blog post and a few pictures do not adequately describe the range of emotions and the amount of positivity generated at this gathering.
