Dungeness Crab, Red Rock Crab
I’ve wanted to get this post up about our Hood Canal Crabbing trip quickly since winter crabbing is closing at the end of this week, but I’ve been waylaid by a virus (probably corona?) that knocked me out the last 3-4 days.
We were only on the water for about 4-5 hours but experienced decent success with keeper crabs. Most of them were Red Rock, but we still got some nice big Dungeness crab sprinkled in the mix.
Puget Sound Crab season extended into 2020. We also recently crabbed Marine Area 8-2 looking for big winter Dungeness crab.
I finally got the boat back out on the water to try and get some crab on the last day of the season in Marine area 8-2 near Everett, WA.
Usually, this season remains open through December, but unfortunately this year WDFW announced the closure on Oct 24th. Why did it close early and how did we do?
Crabbing can be one of the most fun things to do as a family on Puget Sound.
If your kids are like mine, they don’t love downrigger trolling or pulling up shrimp pots from 275 ft, but the much more relaxed and potentially faster action of crabbing is more their speed.

WDFW announced the upcoming 2019 Puget Sound Crab Season on Jun 10th with details on specific dates and locations. Every year this announcement is greatly anticipated as crabbing is one of the most fun harvest activities you can participate in from a dock or from a boat.
Sometimes, conditions come together to make a perfect outing as was the case with our trip to the coast for Razor Clams in the middle of February in 2019.
My brother-in-law was in town and I wanted to give him a taste of the PNW Best Life, so why not go crabbing in December, right? The weather was an enjoyable 42 degrees, and the commercial pots had been out of the water for a few days which means there should be plenty of keeper Dungeness Crab to be had.
