Opening week of trout fishing is a great opportunity to get your kids into fishing. We decided to hold off fishing the busy weekend of the lowland lake trout opener, but we instead got on the lake first thing the following Monday. As it usually does each year for us, Mineral Lake provided exceptional trout fishing as we had a great time helping our kids catch fish.
Are you repelling fish with your downrigger wire? Just switch to braid right? You don’t have this concern of repelling fish with braid, but you also don’t have the advantage of attracting fish with the electrical charge being put out by your downrigger wire either.

Unfortunately, almost all the news on setting the 2019 Salmon Seasons is bad. Yes, there are more coho this year than in previous years. Yes, we need to do our part for conservation purposes and the SRKW situation, but some of the season cuts don’t quite make sense to me.
WDFW just announced via a press release the 2019 Puget Sound Shrimp seasons. I’ve been anxiously awaiting this release of the shrimping seasons this year after enjoying all the Spot Shrimp in my freezer from this past year. There are some interesting aspects to these announced seasons worth thinking about.
Raw Oysters – One of the most well-known delicacies associated with the Pacific Northwest. You might pay north of 20$ for a dozen Oysters at market prices and even more if you want them served to you at a nice restaurant on a half shell. What if I told you, that you could get them for free at dozens of public beaches around Puget Sound?
This years run of spring kings on the Columbia River had me seriously questioning whether it was worth the time and effort to drive 2.5 hours, fish a new part of the river and chase a run predicted to be worse than most recent previous years. Here’s the deal though: One, just one Columbia River Springer is enough to make it worth the effort. The meat quality is better than any other salmon or steelhead (fish?) you can angle for in the Pacific Northwest.
