0:21
best life series Kyle here from PW best
0:25
life and today I'm going to show you uh
0:27
what's new in the past week with wdfw
0:30
rule changes local stories we're going
0:33
to talk we're gonna show trip highlights
0:35
recent duck hunting trip first time duck
0:37
hunter here so that should be fun we're
0:39
going to look at the data and some tools
0:40
on pnwbestlife.com and of course we're
0:43
going to talk about the upcoming week
0:44
weekend and Recreation opportunities
0:47
let's get right to it
0:53
so let's look at a couple of the new
0:55
wdfw rule changes announced in the last
0:57
week we've got the uh reopening of the
1:00
Dungeness and gray wolf rivers to
1:03
fishing as well as uh www also announced
1:07
seven days of coastal razor clam digs
1:09
beginning October 24th Let's uh let's
1:12
dig into that one in particular
1:14
we're looking at this razor clam dig
1:15
announcement and as you can see uh gets
1:18
going October 24th Monday with a zero
1:22
low tide Long Beach twin Arbors kapalis
1:24
and I really like the way this evolves
1:27
through uh through the next week you got
1:30
minus one minus 1.1 minus one uh you
1:35
know the the minus one foot or less low
1:37
tide can often provide just uh very very
1:40
quick limits and easy limits especially
1:42
if you're a beginner you want to Target
1:45
those Tides definitely you want to bring
1:47
a headlamp uh you know getting dark
1:49
closer to six something you can
1:52
typically start digging two hours in
1:55
advance sometimes earlier with these
1:59
all right we've got to talk about a
2:00
story that Andy wagamot from North
2:02
Northwest Sportsman's bag released uh in
2:05
the past week definitely something you
2:07
should you should be aware of yeah if
2:09
you care about Harvest Recreation
2:11
because uh there are groups out there uh
2:13
who are meeting with a convention on
2:17
Vashon Island a two-day convention
2:19
called the Washington fish and wildlife
2:21
management reform convention and uh
2:24
basically this is all about how to
2:25
remove wdfw from being providing
2:29
opportunities uh for consumption while
2:32
uh while preserving conservation to
2:34
basically flip that around and try to
2:36
remove essentially all consumption
2:38
opportunities for fishing hunting
2:41
Etc and really move to
2:44
um only only considering conservation uh
2:47
there's some of your favorite groups out
2:49
there uh like wild fish uh you know the
2:53
uh Wildfish unlimited folks and others
2:57
like that that are just you know they've
2:58
just they've been they've done a lot to
3:00
damage uh hatch reproduction in the
3:03
state they're lots of damage our
3:05
opportunity to to Target Hatchery fish
3:09
and uh and keep uh the fish that we
3:11
catch and have a nice meal at home and
3:14
fish in the freezer so
3:16
um you know this is this is the main
3:18
this is a big problem Andy's kind of got
3:20
keyed in on this and uh since he keyed
3:23
in on it they've deleted the uh they
3:25
deleted the uh information on their
3:28
website about what was going on that's
3:29
what the Second Story should just
3:31
definitely check it out Northwest
3:32
Sportsman's bag uh check out this this
3:34
story that um that Andy put together and
3:39
um you know this last line here says it
3:40
all WWE and the commission may have
3:42
driven you absolutely just say crazy but
3:45
some of their moves over the years and
3:46
decades those ain't nothing compared to
3:48
what could be coming if this reform
3:50
effort succeeds time to get involved
3:52
just something you should definitely
3:54
definitely be aware of a lot of money
4:19
that first shot we were able to get a
4:21
couple widgets they are right at legal
4:35
I got mine but he dope
4:39
I think I saw feathers drop on the one
4:43
you mean what's that did your Bird Land
4:47
the one on your side did it land in the
4:49
water yeah yeah then it took off as soon
4:51
as you took a shot and I was shooting it
4:52
as it was trying to leave but I saw
4:56
feathers dropping on the last shot
4:58
behind it right right but he kept
5:05
yeah I probably was behind her in my
5:09
I mean overall this was just an awesome
5:12
first trip you know having a couple
5:15
ducks to shoot at and just learning uh
5:17
through experiencing you know just how
5:19
it all works and the decoys and the
5:21
calls and uh just the different Behavior
5:24
dynamics of the Ducks and identifying
5:26
ducks and it was a great time really
5:28
grateful for the opportunity to go with
5:31
my uh buddy Connor and show me kind of
5:33
what's going on and definitely
5:35
um here he is with um here he is with a
5:37
couple nice Drakes that he got just
5:43
I just want to introduce you to a
5:45
feature if you're not aware of it on the
5:48
life.com blog which you can you've got
5:51
these the salmon fishing articles by
5:53
river and in each one of these articles
5:56
is a graph like this that updates uh
6:00
every week as the escapement numbers are
6:03
released by wdfw but the various
6:05
hatcheries around the state and uh it
6:08
has both charts that show you uh the
6:11
current run for in this case this is
6:13
fall Chinook on the Green River this is
6:15
the historical run timing of Hatchery
6:17
Chinook on the Green River and here we
6:20
are looking at Coho and run timing for
6:23
Co so as we look through these graphs I
6:25
just want to highlight some of the more
6:27
interesting ones that kind of tell the
6:29
story of what's going on in the state
6:30
with returning Hatchery fish and maybe
6:33
where some of the Harvest opportunities
6:35
might be you definitely want to be the
6:37
earlier the mid part of the Run
6:39
um get your best opportunity to block
6:42
Hatchery salmon of some kind or another
6:45
so let's uh let's go through these
6:47
Rivers all right starting with the green
6:48
you can see there's a nice Bush of Coho
6:50
that came through in the last week and
6:52
it was pretty slim before that but these
6:54
coal are coming in and if you look at
6:56
the Historical run timing you could see
6:58
uh this is right about the time when
7:00
they make a nice good push of similar
7:04
all right moving to the Skagit you can
7:05
see they got a nice bump in the last
7:07
couple weeks as well independent of the
7:09
water levels these fish are still moving
7:11
up definitely want to pay attention to
7:12
the regulations and e-rags before
7:14
fishing the Skagit and if you look at
7:16
historical run timing
7:18
um you know you can see there's been
7:19
bigger pushes of fish earlier but I
7:21
think a lot of those fish are going to
7:23
move in as the water level rise with all
7:24
this recent rain that's coming in take a
7:27
look at the hump tulips and this is just
7:28
kind of uh representative of what's
7:30
going on the coast just fish are not
7:32
moving up they need water these rains
7:35
are going to help big time you tell from
7:37
the historical run timing that uh you
7:39
know there's just nothing like this
7:40
where a run just doesn't have a big push
7:42
yet into at this point in October so
7:44
let's see what we're going to get after
7:46
a week of of good rains moving over to
7:48
the Cowlitz another opportunity although
7:51
fall Chinook has come in uh far I think
7:53
beneath typical run size you can see
7:56
here from the historical run timing by
7:59
the time we're in October we've got
8:00
usually over a thousand fish coming in a
8:02
week and we're just not there yet uh so
8:04
tough on the fall Chinook front and the
8:06
Cowlitz however Coho is a different
8:08
story this is the weekly return weekly
8:12
updated return of coal and it's just
8:13
climbing and climbing and climbing and
8:15
compared to previous rods I think we're
8:17
already uh in really good company here
8:19
with some of the better runs in the last
8:21
uh last few years so could be a great
8:24
great opportunity there
8:29
all right let's talk recreational
8:31
opportunity of the week ahead so uh
8:33
probably my number one uh thing here for
8:35
me at least is going to be looking at
8:37
the big game hunting opportunities
8:39
specifically deer modern rifle season
8:42
you know I've got an all-season or a
8:45
multi-season tag and definitely gonna
8:46
take advantage and here's something I'm
8:48
looking at you know you've got all this
8:49
rain coming in all this these showers
8:54
um inclement weather and then on top of
8:56
that we've got the moon phase kind of
8:58
going to a new moon here in the coming
9:00
weeks and you know a lot of times when
9:02
you have uh you know the these these
9:05
overcast or rainy rainy skies and you
9:07
have no moon uh Moonlight you know these
9:11
animals they tend to be more active
9:12
during daylight hours early morning late
9:15
evening and you know if you were out
9:17
opening weekend didn't get it done and
9:20
you got a tag I think this week is the
9:22
time to go back to the woods uh find
9:25
that animal I'm looking for a black tail
9:26
to fill my tag and hunting uh you know
9:29
around out Rainier and yeah looking
9:31
looking for that for sure you know then
9:33
of course you know I love these razor
9:35
clam digs like I was talking earlier I
9:36
love these razor clam digs on top of
9:38
this week I really like the idea of uh
9:40
going out for razor clams and mushroom
9:42
forging in the same trip like come on
9:45
that's pretty ridiculous did that last
9:47
year I found this big cauliflower flour
9:50
mushroom and chanterelles and uh you
9:52
know oh just fantastic trip can't wait
9:55
to repeat that and uh also this week I
9:58
know one thing I'll be doing is I'll be
9:59
going over to Central Washington and
10:01
probably trying to fish the Yakima
10:02
that's open uh near near Prosser we'll
10:05
be staying there for for a night and uh
10:07
definitely be out uh first time ever
10:10
fishing the Yakima I can't wait to check
10:12
that out kind of some desert salmon
10:14
fishing opportunity uh we'll probably be
10:16
in next week's highlights for sure
10:18
unless things go really really poorly uh
10:21
so I also got to look at you know Co
10:23
fishing around Puget Sound you know if
10:25
you've got that itch to to hit salmon
10:28
still and uh you know there's there's
10:31
still Rivers putting out coal in the
10:33
Puget town and man these rains these
10:35
rains are going to set in these Coho on
10:37
the coast uh up those rivers and I don't
10:40
know exactly when wdfw is going to
10:42
reopen things they'll probably uh wait
10:44
let a lot of fish go in the spawning
10:46
grounds were into the Hatchery before uh
10:48
before giving us all a green light but I
10:51
would bet by maybe maybe November 1st
10:54
maybe earlier uh we'll see those Rivers
10:56
open up again and uh that is going to be
10:58
just incredible incredible uh Coho
11:01
fishing when that happens and of course
11:02
I also got to give a shout out to some
11:04
waterfowl hunting some doing doing the
11:07
bird thing you know it's not as good as
11:08
obviously opening day is fantastic for
11:11
that but um there's still there's still
11:13
birds moving around and find a pond find
11:16
some public land or if you've got access
11:18
to private land and get something going
11:20
there with birds Ducks
11:22
um you know we saw a lot of geese moving
11:26
um you know look for the fields for for
11:28
the geese but that's an opportunity for
11:30
sure that uh is is worth your attention
11:34
if you have another idea of uh maybe a
11:37
local opportunity you'd like to share
11:38
drop it in the comments engage with us
11:41
give us any ideas to improve uh the the
11:44
show going forward and kind of what I'm
11:46
trying to do here you kind of get the
11:47
idea so uh love to get your feedback and
11:50
ideas around Harvest Recreation uh going
11:53
forward if you haven't already please
11:54
give us a like subscribe to the channel
11:56
