What a week of chasing coastal coho and finding mushrooms on public land on the WA Coast! We've got this atmospheric river dumping 3+ TRILLION gallons of water on us, which are gonna throw the rivers out of shape, but when they drop back next week, it's gonna be crazy good fishing!
We start with the what's new headlines and update on what WDFW has opened or closed.
We share trip highlights from our trip to the coast twitching jigs for coho, chum and chinook. Also, our search for chanterelles and boletes mushrooms on public land.
The video also covers the recent hatchery escapement data on several rivers in chart format, some of the numbers are eye popping! Lots and lots of coho!
We finish by covering the harvest recreation opportunity we are thinking about: Coho on the coast, Chum in the interior rivers and the coast, mushrooms in the mountains...November is chanterelle time! A little bit of big game talk, highlighting the squidding season and some trip ideas that combine harvest goals.
Let us know what you liked, what we can do to improve and your own ideas for harvest recreation opportunities this week.

welcome to the atmospheric River edition
0:13
of this week's show I'm out here in the
0:16
rain getting dumped on uh there's gonna
0:18
be about three trillion gallons of water
0:21
dumped on the state of Washington by
0:23
this time tomorrow and this show is
0:26
going to be awesome we're going to talk
0:27
about all kinds of good stuff like
0:28
Coastal salmon that are popping off
0:31
we're gonna talk about shellfish
0:32
opportunities hunting opportunities and
0:34
of course all the mushroom Activia
0:36
that's going on here as well so stick
0:38
with us
0:42
I'm going to tell you about what's new
0:45
uh news-wise here last week we've got a
0:48
few things from wfw most notably razor
0:52
clams are shut down we got this domoic
0:54
acid Spike going on and uh you know they
0:57
said something about the storms
0:58
potentially being a cause for it so I
1:01
don't know what this latest one's going
1:02
to do uh to our domoic acid level so
1:05
they're just too high too risky to
1:06
enable razor clam digs right now but
1:08
hopefully those will come on back
1:10
together come back on
1:11
um maybe in a month or so you know we'll
1:14
keep an eye on that here we go Marine
1:16
area 13. we've got uh the chum retention
1:19
opportunity in Deep South Sound and car
1:22
Inlet that's right that is uh basically
1:24
the mouth outside Minter Creek which uh
1:28
you know you get the bobber anchovy
1:30
thing out there that's pretty awesome
1:31
and uh you can see my flooded backyard
1:33
back there it's just raining like crazy
1:35
right now so additionally if you're up
1:38
in the north sound you got Snohomish
1:40
skycom mission Colony rivers with their
1:43
Coho season extended November 13th maybe
1:46
it'll even go longer we'll get into in
1:49
the data a little bit later but the The
1:51
Coho numbers have just been absolutely
1:53
fantastic
1:54
[Music]
2:09
I don't know how do you feel like it
2:13
foreign
2:18
that was just right in that water right
2:21
in front
2:25
[Music]
2:31
oh is that him right there yeah oh he's
2:33
a big Chinook
2:35
yeah
2:36
he's right right in the right in the
2:38
face too look at that
2:40
that's awesome
2:41
[Music]
2:44
look at that oh this is sweet
2:46
oh
2:51
that's a nice version yeah I mean he's
2:54
not right
2:57
oh yeah for sure
3:00
all right so we've got to talk about
3:01
some of this Coastal salmon uh stuff
3:03
that's going on here you know a week ago
3:05
they opened up the rivers again on the
3:08
coast and uh in time with the water
3:10
coming up and then it dropped uh down
3:13
into nice fishable levels and it was
3:16
game on I mean there are so many salmon
3:20
in these Coastal Rivers right now uh
3:22
we're talking Chinook Coho Chum uh just
3:26
I mean just it's fantastic and I gotta
3:29
to get in on a little bit of that and we
3:31
actually we actually caught every
3:33
species of of salmon that I just
3:35
mentioned so the Harvest goal is to get
3:37
a nice nice bright Coho but you're gonna
3:40
have to pick through the other species
3:42
you're gonna have to pick through uh
3:44
some stale fish and you know I love I
3:47
mean I absolutely love fishing Coho with
3:49
spinners but with the water you know I
3:52
think I've been like four days from the
3:53
high water event and a lot of times you
3:55
know they fish they move up to different
3:57
places and then they stay there for a
3:59
little while and they're not as fresh to
4:01
that spot and what I always say is you
4:03
know you're you're it's not that the
4:05
fish is fresh it's that the fish is
4:07
fresh to that spot that makes it a good
4:09
a good biter and so if you're you know
4:12
out there tossing a lot of spinners
4:14
usually you want to find fresh
4:16
aggressive fish and we saw that out of
4:19
the hole that we were in we saw a few of
4:21
them come out with spinners and those
4:22
were nice bright uh dimebrite Coho but
4:25
uh really the technique for sort of you
4:29
know not being picky about what fish you
4:31
catch is is is jigging twitching jigs to
4:35
be more specific uh this is a an
4:37
outstanding technique that uh you know
4:40
there's a little bit of skill to do it
4:42
correctly most important your downswing
4:46
of your Rod has to be sharp enough that
4:48
you create slack in the line uh you
4:51
gotta use the right size jig for the
4:53
conditions half three quarter ounce or
4:56
the river that I'm fishing it's all
4:58
about letting that thing dive down down
5:00
you're lifting Your Rod to try to feel
5:03
the fish you're not setting the hook
5:05
like some people will do
5:08
um you know that gets its own its own
5:09
name twitch snagging that's not what
5:11
you're doing at all you're trying to
5:13
drop your Rod tip and let that thing
5:15
sink because that's what creates the the
5:17
motion that that fish will bite on we
5:20
hooked again Chinook Coho and Chum all
5:23
doing it with the same same same
5:25
technique same jig same spot uh on the
5:28
river
5:30
oh my goodness
5:32
that is beautiful
5:34
[Music]
5:37
wow that's in such good shape
5:43
keep thinking I should be seeing Trails
5:46
over here but
5:50
[Music]
5:55
you know
5:57
[Music]
5:58
like this looks like a chanterelle
6:04
yep
6:06
one
6:07
see see this is the this is the
6:10
chanterelle markings as they have these
6:12
forked okay ridges you see the edges
6:14
yeah I see them
6:16
so this there yeah that probably yeah
6:18
this whole area we should now be on
6:21
hyper alert for that's probably a
6:23
chanterelle
6:27
describe the
6:28
this uh reach a greater audience
6:34
all right you have gotta look at the
6:38
escapement graphs that are that updated
6:40
and are up on pnwbestlife.com for these
6:44
different rivers that have coho
6:46
returning in Hatchery I mean they are uh
6:48
they're they're stupid the numbers are
6:50
just uh absolutely amazing whether we're
6:52
talking the cowards the Skagit the SATs
6:55
up are you kidding me again uh the the
6:58
it's the green I mean we've got prolific
7:01
runs returns of Coho happening right now
7:05
and this this latest storm is going to
7:07
bring even more fish in and when this
7:10
when this thing passes we're gonna get
7:12
an opportunity on these fish I also got
7:14
to talk about the marina Marine Area 11
7:17
black mouth opportunity a few people out
7:19
doing it and uh a little bit of success
7:22
right not a ton of fish being caught but
7:24
there are there are a few fish to be to
7:26
be found and don't ignore Marine Area 13
7:28
for for black mouth as well I mean you
7:30
want a trip idea you know launch your
7:33
boat see if you get there's any squid
7:35
going on around Point Defiance and then
7:37
and then fish black mouth over there
7:40
roll out fish black mouth uh in uh near
7:43
Point Defiance
7:45
um go go south of the Narrows Bridge
7:48
petition 13 and then run over to mentor
7:51
and throw bobbery and anchovy for the
7:53
rest of the day uh I mean you can make a
7:55
whole day plan out of that
8:00
all right we got to talk about big
8:02
opportunities for the weekend of course
8:03
uh Coho I've got water drops and gets
8:06
into more fishable shape uh you gotta go
8:08
nuts with Nicole get the twitch and jigs
8:10
out get the Spinners out uh go to your
8:12
favorite social River and make it happen
8:15
uh return with the die bright Coho and
8:19
then if you if you go out and many of
8:21
these streams they're going to have Chum
8:22
in there at the same time bring a Chum
8:24
rig you know if the cold don't want to
8:25
play throw that uh jig under a float tip
8:29
with a little bit of shrimp and you'll
8:32
have a blast catching Chum after Chum
8:34
after Chum yeah you may not want to keep
8:36
them probably can't keep them in some
8:38
places but uh what a blast what a great
8:40
great fight uh they are uh yeah just
8:43
Jigs and shrimp so this this jig is
8:46
probably like my go-to it's this uh
8:51
um 111 112 bomac Arrow jig
8:54
it's just 1 8 ounce while you're out
8:57
there you know look for some public land
8:59
some elevation some second growth force
9:02
and find some find some mushroom find
9:04
some chanterelles uh Ops I mean we we
9:07
love combining uh Harvest Rec goals like
9:10
that I mean this is a perfect
9:11
opportunity on the coast you can find
9:13
them sea level and higher no problem
9:15
I've noticed around this time of year
9:18
you know in the in the Cascades I tend
9:20
to find them above 1500 uh elevation is
9:24
more where I see them I know you can
9:26
find them sea level around here too in
9:27
the interior but that's just the I have
9:30
found just fields of chanterelles really
9:33
like the 1800 to 2200 for some reason
9:36
been my magic number so
9:38
um you know if maybe you're scouting the
9:39
late season for for uh for hunting maybe
9:42
your
9:43
um maybe you're screwing around with
9:45
some some elk uh General season mod you
9:48
know modern firearm right now too
9:50
um one of the things I'll say about that
9:52
is you have on your side the this
9:55
weather event this is this early weather
9:57
event dumping a ton of snow in the
9:59
mountains uh freezing level coming down
10:01
big time and that moves that moves these
10:05
these migratory animals especially
10:07
around Mount Rainier uh where there's a
10:10
big herd that comes down and Winter's
10:13
lower elevations and you can take
10:15
advantage of it in that hunting season I
10:17
wish I had a multi-season tag I wish I
10:19
had a modern rifle tag for Elk I'd be
10:22
pretty excited right now hopefully
10:23
you'll have some success and get into
10:25
that as well and then the other thing
10:27
about this cold dry weather that we're
10:29
gonna have next week is is squid I saw I
10:32
saw a post from Seattle squid on
10:33
Instagram they're starting to book trips
10:35
uh for for squid out in Elliott Bay and
10:38
stuff and man I am definitely eyeing
10:41
squid opportunity I didn't do enough
10:43
squidding last year and uh definitely uh
10:46
squid are so much fun uh you can find a
10:49
school of um uh during the daytime as
10:52
well as at night a lot of times it's I
10:54
involved daytime squitting it's just
10:56
absolutely a blast so don't don't forget
10:58
about that don't forget about winter
11:00
crab
11:01
um Greenery 11 black mouth yeah I think
11:04
that's about it an idea that that I've
11:06
got in the back of my head is is uh
11:09
launching somewhere up north and taking
11:10
advantage of maybe marinery 9 winter
11:12
crabbing and looking for some squid
11:14
during the daytime while the while the
11:16
pots are so good
11:18
um that's a that's an interesting idea
11:21
um that we're gonna take advantage of at
11:22
some point until next time
11:24
stay dry
